Purchased on a transatlantic art auction onboard QE2 - Beggars Receiving Alms at the Door of a House is an engraving on ivory-colored paper realized by Charles Amand Durand (1831-1905) after an etching by Rembrandt. This wonderful piece of art belongs to a late edition of the 19th century. Signed on the plate. Good condition Rembrandt known simply as Rembrandt (Leiden, 15 July 1606 - Amsterdam, 4 October 1669), was a Dutch painter and engraver. He is generally considered to be one of the greatest painters in European art history. Having achieved great success as a portrait painter from a young age. His drawings and paintings were already popular during his lifetime. Rembrandt's greatest creative triumphs are especially evident in the portraits of his contemporaries, his self-portraits, and illustrations of scenes from the Bible. In both painting and printing, he exhibited a thorough knowledge of classical iconography. We bought several different etchings and will be selling them over time. This one measures 17 x 15 inches . It cost a fortune when we bought it and we have enjoyed it for 30 years or so. It’s time for someone else to enjoy.
