The Supermarine Spitfire MJ627 was originally built as a single-seat Mk.IX and rolled off the Castle Bromwich production line in 1944. It served with the Royal Canadian Air Force’s No. 441 Squadron, one of the squadrons that formed part of the 2nd Tactical Air Force in support of Allied ground forces after D-Day. The Spitfire saw action over northwest Europe, participating in patrols, ground s, and escort missions during the final stages of World II. On September 27, 1944, MJ627 was credited with a confirmed aerial victory when F/O H.S. Umphrey shot down a Messerschmitt Bf 109 over Nijmegen.
After the , MJ627 was converted into a two-seat Spitfire T9 trainer configuration, a common post modification aimed at preserving and repurposing surviving aircraft for training and civilian use.
