HISTORY ASPECTS -
The Martin PBM-3B Mariner was a versatile and robust maritime patrol bomber developed for the United States Navy during World II. As an evolution of the earlier PBM-1 and PBM-3 models, the PBM-3B variant was specifically configured for anti-submarine fare (ASW) and convoy escort missions. Entering service in the early 1940s, the Mariner featured a high-mounted wing, twin Wright R-2600 radial engines, and a boat-like fuselage that enabled it to land on water. The aircraft carried radar, depth charges, and sometimes torpedoes, making it well-suited for tracking and destroying German U-boats in the Atlantic and Japanese submarines in the Pacific.
The PBM-3B gained its reputation during critical operations in the Battle of the Atlantic. Flying long, grueling missions from coastal bases and seaplane tenders, Mariners patrolled thousands of square miles of open ocean to protect Allied shipping lanes. Equipped with Air-to-Surface Vessel (ASV) radar and Leigh Lights, they could detect and submarines at night—a significant advancement in maritime fare. Mariners operated from bases in locations like Bermuda, Iceland, and the Azores, forming part of the broader Allied ASW campaign that eventually turned the tide against the U-boat menace.
In the Pacific Theater, PBM-3Bs served in patrol squadrons such as VPB-27 and VPB-16, engaging in search-and-rescue, reconnaissance, and anti-submarine patrols from ford bases like the Philippines and the Solomon Islands. Their endurance and versatility allowed them to cover vast distances across the ocean and respond quickly to distress calls or enemy sightings. While less celebrated than other flying boats, the PBM-3B was instrumental in maintaining maritime superiority and safeguarding Allied naval operations across both oceans.
This finely crafted 1 - 144 scale model with accurate markings, weathered detailing, and a historical presence that evokes the drama of WWII naval patrols, it’s a must-have addition for collectors and history buffs passionate about seaplane fare.
