This photograph was taken during intermission at the School of American Ballet (SAB), which was founded in 1934. One of the foremost conservatories of classical dance in the world, SAB has produced dancers for virtually all of the leading ballet companies in the United States, as well as international companies. Alfred Eisenstaedt was one of the first four staff photographers at LIFE when it launched in 1936, the year this photograph was taken.
