The early date of this shallow dish of yellowware and pigment, in "Bird Hanging from Sky Band" design, with classic double framing lines, one heavy, and creative use of negative space is indicative of the work of Nampeyo of Hano. It holds all the hallmarks of her signature glyphs. The red paint appears to have been daubed onto the surface, a practice diagnostic of Nampeyo. The classic swirl design that Nampeyo borrowed from the prehistoric Sikyatki pottery is what dominated her early work. There are also features of Polacca tradition as seen in the red painted rim - another indication of how early a piece this is.

Fine condition with no repairs or restoration. Size is 6.375" x 5.25" x 1.375" high. The bottom of the bowl is perfectly rounded with the long stroke marks indicative of her polishing, and has the blushes and tonality of being traditionally fired. There's an old Fred Harvey label on the back, "From the Hopi Villages." It is the older, original style, dating it to ca 1905.
