(Frank Winfield) Woolworth purchased the Kinney Shoe Corporation, which later became a specialty shoe store. In 1974, the Woolworth corporation created a new division called Foot Locker, which exclusively sells athletic footwear. The first Foot Locker store opened in 1974 in a mall in City of Industry, California. In 1988, Foot Locker was founded as a separate company. In 2001, Woolworth's changed its name to Foot Locker because many of its stores were Kinney Shoes and Woolworth's."
