Vintage or Antique Hawaiian Fishing Line w/ 43 Lead Weights – Found in 1920s Napili Plantation House – Possibly ʻOlona or Cotton

Rare antique Hawaiian fishing line consisting of 43 hand-cast cylindrical lead weights attached to segments of hand-twisted rope. This was found in the garage of one of the oldest plantation homes in Napili/Kapalua, West Maui—a historically rich coastal area tied to plantation life. The home was that of the plantation foreman at one point.
The house had been lived in by the same family for many years. It went on the market a few years ago and when I looked at it I found. treasure trove of antique and vintage things. Most tools and fishing ropes/poles were handmade.

Each weight measures approximately 3.5” long by 0.5” wide and weighs 3.25–3.3 oz. The rope is in segments and very brittle due to age. Fiber type is unknown, but likely an early natural fiber—possibly cotton or potentially native Hawaiian ʻolona, which was prized for its strength and durabili
