The Tillett family of Belize is well-known for producing local art and crafts, particularly in the mid to late 20th century. Their carvings, textiles, and paintings were popular with both residents and visiting travelers, and today they are appreciated as authentic examples of Belizean folk art.
This vintage carved wooden fish sculpture on stand measures approximately 23 inches long and is signed on the base: “C. Tillett, 31 New Ave, Belize City, Belize.”
The sculpture depicts a long-bodied predatory fish, most closely resembling a barracuda (sometimes described as shark carvings in Belizean folk art). Likely carved mid-to-late 20th century from Belizean hardwood, possibly mahogany or zericote.
Condition: Very good vintage condition overall. The very tip of the top fin is broken off. Damage like this is quite common in older wooden carvings, especially with delicate parts like fins. Given the small, broken tip on the fin of this barracuda carving, a good approach would be to use
