Once a base for a candleholder, these beautiful brass winged dragons have been separated at the front of the orb in the dragon’s mouth.
Meant to be portable, yet each dragon is over a pound of solid brass! The middle of the curled tail would have been used as a finger hole to better grip the holder.
It is difficult to date items without some kind of marking. Definitely have age to them and handmade, as the variations are obvious. My research has lead me to the c1860's timeframe. Even if that is incorrect, I would estimate that these were created no later than the early part of the 20th Century ; as candle holders would have been made out of a lighter metal by the1900’s.
Lovely patina – cleaned but not polished. Each is approx 7” long, 4” high, 1” wide between wings and over 1 pound net weight.
