These bowls were made by Stieff Pewter in the mid-1960s, as part of a reproduction program initiated by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation after John D. Rockefeller Jr. financed the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg. The bowl is a reproduction of an antique piece from the Colonial Williamsburg collection.Pewter is an alloy consisting primarily of tin and lead and was commonly used in colonial America for making household items such as plates, tankards, and serving vessels. The Stieff company created a range of pewter reproductions inspired by items seen at Colonial Williamsburg during a period of heightened interest in the American colonies leading up to the Bicentennial celebration in 1974.
marked with the Stieff and Colonial Williamsburg marks on the bottom and were produced as early as 1972.
