This elephant was hand crafted by a young Cambodian artisan affiliated with Artisans d'Angkor, a company dedicated to the promotion and preservation of Khmer traditional arts. In Khmer tradition, the elephant is a special member of the animal kingdom, and a majority of Angkor Wat temples feature statues of this divine creature. They are often considered temple guardians. This particular sculpture is made from a beautiful brownish-red hardwood that is commonly seen in wood sculptures in this region. It measures approximately 9" long (3rd photo).
CONDITION
Sculpture is in very good condition but there are a few small nicks and imperfections, e.g. last photo. Color of the wood varies from a deep brownish red to a warmer one depending upon the side of elephant you are admiring.
