“Walter Whitman Jr. (May 31, 1819–March 26, 1892) was an American poet, essayist + journalist; he also wrote 2 novels. He is considered one of the most influential poets in American literature + world literature. Whitman incorporated both transcendentalism + realism in his writings + is often called the father of free verse. His work was controversial in his time, particularly his 1855 poetry collection Leaves of Grass, which was described by some as obscene for its overt sensuality.”
“After self-publishing in 1855, he spent most of his professional life writing, revising + expanding the collection until his death. Either 6 or 9 editions were produced, depending how one defines “new edition.” The modifications resulted in vastly different copies circulating in his lifetime. The 1st was 12 poems, the last a compilation of over 400.”
