This is a nice vintage (c. 1970s-1980s) Pende mask done in a Mbuya style and would look amazing in an Africn art collection or as a stand alone wall piece. This was most likely carved to be sold as a tourist piece, and as such they added a touch of flair to the more traditional masks.
Pende masks are a classic of African Congolese tribal art. This Pende mask with exaggerated features and dimensions was used during initiation rites and masked festivals.
The typology of the Mbuya, the masks all have in common a geometrisation of the forms, a triangular face, a more or less snub nose, prominent eyebrows, sometimes continuous over the whole width of the face. The forehead is rounded and boulbus, the eyelids are heavy under a continuous line of the browbone.
