Kwan Yin is a universal deity from the Buddhist tradition, also known as Quan Yin, Kwanseum Bosal (Korea), Quan'Am (Vietnam), Kannon or Shokanzeon Bosatsu (Japan), Kanin (Bali), and Tara (Tibet). She embodies compassion and plays the role of a Bodhisattva. A Bodhisattva has passed thorough the 10 Buddhist levels to achieve enlightenment, but vows to remain on the earthly realm to help other pilgrims in their quest for enlightenment. She hears the cries of all beings and answers prayers for help. In Chinese traditions the Kwan Yin will literally "lend a hand" to those in dire need, which is why the statue's hand is removable. In these renditions, she stands on a bed of Lotus flowers, which symbolize purity, as does the simple white porcelain from which the statue is cast.
