From the album, Red Headed Stranger, both the album and this song, BLUE EYES CRYING IN THE RAIN "kick-started" Willie's sluggish career after 13 long years without a song anywhere near the top 20 on the Billboard Charts. YES....he was a renowned songwriter, with CRAZY and HELLO WALLS among other great hits under his belt, but this golden oldie (we should say ICON) won him a Grammy for Best Male Country Vocalist, and an American Music Award for Favorite Country Singer after the album's and single's release in 1975. After than ----- Katy bar the door, another hundred or so albums and Willie just keeps 'em comin' !!!!
Roy Acuff was the first to sing "Blue Eyes....." in 1947, and it was covered by Hank in 51, Johnny Russell, Charley Pride, Conway and scores of others, but NOBODY did it like Willie.
