An extraordinary example of early 20th-century Japanese Kutani porcelain, richly hand-painted and adorned with gilt Moriage detailing.
This vase (c. 1930s–1940s) embodies the height of Kutani artistry, featuring finely painted figural scenes of immortals and deities, rendered with raised enamel (Moriage) and accented in luminous gold. The palette is bold yet balanced, with deep greens, cobalt blues, russet reds, and shimmering gilded highlights.
On the base, a red Kutani mark authenticates its kiln origin. Unlike mass-produced tourist ware of the era, this piece carries true artisan quality and documented provenance: a 1984 Butterfield & Butterfield auction house appraisal (San Francisco) estimated its value at $150–$350 in that market, the equivalent of $450–$1,050 today.
