Offered this beautiful antique majolica oyster plate for your private collection.
Unmarked except for a mark cut into the clay, as seen in the photo, this item was made before 1891, when the McKinley Tariff Act of 1891 required the inclusion of at least the country of origin on each item. This Act was updated in 1922, and it was then necessary to add "Made in ....", which helps to date it.
It features wells for six oysters and a center well for lemon or sauce. The rim is trimmed in gold, but some gold has been lost.
It measures 8.75 inches in diameter.
It is in excellent antique condition with no chips or cracks! It does exhibit overall glaze crazing, which is normal for an item of this age.
