Anna of Denmark, wife of James VI and I, was the first queen consort of England and Scotland. Despite being judged as frivolous and vain, she was a determined and intelligent woman who made significant contributions to the cultural lives of her kingdoms. This study aims to contextualize her as an inheritor of the bloody legacies of previous consorts and as a woman who exploited political faction to her benefit and that of her children.

Upon the passing of Elizabeth I, Anna of Denmark, wed to James VI and I, assumed the prestigious title of the first queen consort of both England and Scotland. She presented her subjects, residing on both sides of the border, with an ideal of consortship: a captivating and fertile woman with a penchant for extravagant displays.

However, history has not been particularly benevolent towards the first British consort. Anna has faced widespread criticism, being labeled as frivolous, vain, foolish, and more concerned with dancing and pleasure than with politics. This assessment is unjust. As recent scholarship has begun to reveal, the queen was a resolute and intelligent woman whose contributions to the cultural vibrancy of her kingdoms were of paramount significance in late-Renaissance Britain.

The purpose of this study is to place Anna in a more nuanced context, rather than viewing her as a mere footnote in the annals of sixteenth-century queens. Rather, we aim to contextualize her as an heir to the bloody legacies of previous consorts on both sides of the border. What emerges is a woman of remarkable wit, intelligence, and taste, who adeptly exploited political factions to her advantage and that of her offspring. She displayed remarkable skill in navigating a slippery husband and sovereign, exhibiting a keen ability to manage complex relationships. Furthermore, she sought innovative solutions to address the growing challenges posed by her foreignness, demonstrating a proactive approach to navigate the complexities of her position.

In the face of an errant king who placed little value on public opinion, Anna served as the public face of the monarchy, projecting a regal and dignified demeanor. Her unwavering commitment to the institution and her dedication to her role as queen consort left a lasting impact on British history, cementing her place as a significant figure in the annals of royal lineage.
