Beautiful signed stoneware crock with lid, measuring approximately 9.5 inches tall. Hand-thrown and featuring classic cobalt blue floral decoration on salt-glazed stoneware. Lid fits well and includes a hand-formed knob. Interior has a deep brown glaze and the base is unglazed with wheel-thrown spirals visible. Signature "Downes" inscribed near the rim.
This piece evokes 19th-century American stoneware with its form and decoration and may date to the early-to-mid 20th century, possibly from a studio potter working in a traditional style. Excellent condition with no cracks or chips noted. A wonderful addition for collectors of folk pottery or early American-style ceramics.
